Intro

Hi! Welcome to the Play to Learn blog. I am hoping to use this blog to share information and tips about speech and language development. As this is my first post, I want to introduce myself and share about my personal approach to speech therapy.

My name is Courtney Smith and I have lived in Raleigh since 2002. In middle school and high school I spent approximately 99% of my waking (and sometimes sleeping) hours at New Life Camp playing and coaching basketball, attending homeschool enrichment activities, and working as a summer camp counselor. My roots as a camp counselor ultimately led to my decision to become a pediatric speech therapist. I got my bachelor's degree in Communication Science and Disorders at Appalachian State and my master's degree in Speech Language Pathology at UNC Greensboro. I have worked with clients of all ages, but I have a special place in my heart for children.

I believe that a young child's number one job is playing. Children are designed to play, so that they can learn! It's a surprising thing to grow up realize all your toys were tricking you into learning and developing. I am passionate about tailoring therapy sessions to keep children engaged and motivated to make progress toward their goals. When children are playing, they are learning! That is my goal at Play To Learn Speech and Language Services.
